          Duties & Responsibilities As part of the infectious disease initiative, the successful candidate will assist in research aimed at leveraging population genetics of human malaria, Plasmodium falciparum, toward biological understanding. Responsibilities will include tissue culture of P. falciparum, including preparation of media and culture reagents, long-term storage and retrieval of cell lines, culture adaptation of patient derived samples and sub cloning, drug testing and other phenotypic assays, and isolation of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and protein samples. The successful candidate will also be able to execute basic molecular biology techniques including gene cloning, transfection, and analysis of DNA, RNA and protein using standard laboratory techniques. Responsibilities also include molecular and genotyping studies that utilize polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, whole genome amplification, gene cloning and use of a number of genotyping platforms including but not limited to Taqman and High Resolution Melt assays. Finally, the candidate will be responsible for supporting any number of other routine molecular biological procedures as well as basic laboratory duties.

          The candidate will be expected to manage samples and data with precision, and perform simple and routine computational activities to summarize biological data. The candidate is required to interact with a large variety of other staff and researchers including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and senior scientists, as required for each responsibility. The candidate will be directly supervised in the laboratory and report to the Senior Research Scientist in the lab, as well present their work in group and laboratory meetings to update the Principal Investigator.

          Please note: This is a grant-funded term appointment through 10/31/2013.
          Basic Qualifications College coursework in Biology or related field required, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess at least 1 year of experience in a research laboratory, including knowledge of molecular biology methods and significant tissue culture expertise. Education beyond high school may count towards experience.
          Additional Qualifications Experience with P. falciparum a strong plus. Good working knowledge of computers required. Strong analytical and quantitative skills required. Must possess a high level of initiative and the ability to work with little supervision. Must have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to multi-task. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment is expected.
